Waukesha VGF type

Engines of VGF type were designed from 1987 to 1993 for compound load operation. In comparison to dimensions and cost of other high-speed engines VGF are equal in power capacity but have more unit capacity and reduce service charges and operating costs. All VGF type engines has unit Custom Engine Control® (CEC) that provides exact firing angle adjustment, emission abatement control and in these engines for the first time in the world patented combustion chamber with high turbulence that provides significant decrease of fuel consumption was used.

Every engine has interchangeable components and junctions. High cooling temperature enables to use them as cogeneration plant.

Construction of VGF is designed as fixed equipment to run on various kinds of fuel during long-time mode of operation and allows performing maintenance directly on the operating site without moving it or its components to manufacturing plant or to service platform. Gas engines VGF were designed by Waukesha as an answer to market demand for engines that have space-saving dimensions, high output power and low start-up investments.

Gas engines of VGF type are high-speed engines and come in two configurations: to run on enriched or depleted fuel mixture and low inlet pressure of fuel. VGF accepts short-time overload performance (less than 2 hours per day, overload can be 10% of rated value). As well as VHP type engines, VGF type became a matter for considerable scientific research and Waukesha announced starting batch production of its new model type, so called Extender Series.

In Extender Series capacity of oil pan was significantly extended and it made oil change interval twice larger. Furthermore, oil pan was equipped with convenient cover, it allowed to maintain oil pump, main bearings and connecting rod bearing without demounting.

Secondly, extended capacity of oil pan significantly reduced vibrancies. In the new model type we used polishing of valve stem and added valve gear’s lubrication. It is important that engine breather is equipped with built-in vacuum operated adjuster to level high pressure in crankcase and eliminate oil leakage.

In every VGF model interchangeable components are used. It allows having small amount of machine spares in stock. In VGF type every cylinder head has individual water cooling system. Crankshaft was forged out of alloy steel and it excepts vibrations by means of its fine balanced design. Crankcase has hatches that simplify technical staff access to distribution shaft, connecting rods, oil pump and bearings. VGF in its base case already has self-cleaning cartridge type oil filters located on engine frame. Distinctive characteristic of a crankcase fumes disposal system is presence of exchangeable fiberglass separator that is able to entrap oil vapor. This makes filtered air from crankcase to go to intake system and to minimize oil concentration in it.
